Dark Void, the latest offering from the people at Capcom, is a shooter that boasts great promise as "The First Fully 3-D Shooter". I had to luxury of sitting down long enough to decide if it lives up to that promise. Read on if you wish to find out what I learned!
Dark Void is set in the 1930's, fashioning itself after classic World War II movies and one of my favorites, The Rocketeer. Visually, the game is stunning. The world looks absolutely beautiful and lovingly designed. Jungles and other outdoor terrain look amazing and very detailed. Indoor areas, such as the alien stations, look great but after a while begin to seem repetitive and too familiar. Character models are fantastic too. The design uses a combination of realism and some fun animated quality to play up the quirky excitement found in movies like The Rocketeer. Visually the game delivers an overall enjoyable environment with great animation and modelling.
The music by Bear Mcreary is immersive and enjoyable. He does a fantastic job of setting the tone for the world and the moments within it. The game sound fits perfectly with the world that has been created. Even the cheesy lasers fit right in with the quirky tones of the game. Weapons have a certain level of power achieved due to the great sound engineering placed within the game. Voice acting is well done and convincing as well, thanks to a cast headed by none other than Nolan North(if you don't recognize the name, maybe you should take a look at Uncharted : Drake's Fortune, or Uncharted 2 : Among Thieves).
Now that I'm done raving about the cosmetic aspects of the game, let's dig in. "The First Fully 3-D Shooter", huh? Is this true? YES IT IS! With the addition of the jet pack, you now TRULY have the ability to go anywhere in the world! By referring to this game as 3-D, their goal was to state that you can use the entire world, instead of only being on specific rails. The vertical aspect of the game can be a bit disorienting however. It becomes hard at times to decipher if you're going up or down, which can be a pain when you're trying to decide if you should let go of a ledge, or climb over it. Flight is fun and easy to get into, but can be dangerous if you're not paying attention. Once you launch yourself into flight, you immediately head in the direction you are facing at breakneck speed. Be careful to aim in a safe direction or you just might find yourself heading home in a body bag...not cool. While IN flight, the jet pack is very easy to control. You have standard flight control, including a boost option. One fun aspect is the quick maneuvers, such as roll and a 180 degree spin. These are a blast to play with. Another fun aspect of flying is the combat. Your jet pack has guns. Really fun machine guns. Their easy to shoot, but hard as hell to aim. There is NO auto lock, so you have to get comfortable with the flight control really quick. You can also use the hover option for using your machine gun or other weapons you pick up, as well as hovering to land in hard to reach places for a tactical advantage.
On the ground, combat isn't anything spectacularly new. Run, shoot, hide behind stuff, repeat. There is even a melee action, albeit a small and simplistic one. Your melee option? Push one button and you perform a random melee attack. In some cases the attack is an instant kill, in others it disorients the target long enough to either shoot them or hit them again. Take your pick. Weaponry is kinda cool, but not awesome. It's some space stuff and some classic stuff modified to look cooler. As you play through the game, you collect energy orb things...like, well, a lot of games now. And, you guessed it, you cash in the orbs to pay for weapon upgrades, like accuracy and damage increases. Nothing new there either. At least they were cool enough to include that, since most games do now.
Time for the story ladies and gents. What the hell is going on here? Well, an ancient alien race, whom occupied Earth at some point in our passed and ran away for some reason to another dimension known as "The Void"(Hence the title), has decided it's time to start heading back to Earth to claim what they believe belongs to them. They've been using humans as puppets to prepare the way for their return. Our hero, an ex-military pilot turned delivery pilot, is tossed into the fray while transporting goods through...dun dun dun...The Bermuda Triangle(Who would've thought that The Bermuda Triangle was an alien vortex and entryway?). Okay, that's a pretty cool concept I guess. Anyway, the hero ends up getting caught up in this battle and races through The Void to get answers and ultimately save the world from a power hungry alien race. Not the best concept for a story, but well thought out and well pieced together. The story is easy to follow and fairly enjoyable. It's well written and well acted. Nothing seems out of place or without explanation.
Now I'll take a chance to rant. Where is multiplayer? I'm a huge fan of playing games with friends. I wanted to get the chance to have some online aerial combat. That would have been a blast. Either facing off as a bunch of rocketmen, or having teams take on alien attacks via similar game modes like horde mode....or even have some players control aliens and others control rocketmen! Anyways, zero multiplayer takes away some of the replayability for me. Without that, I feel no reason to play again after I've finished ANY game.
Overall, a great game that's worth playing through. If you don't care about multiplayer, the game is definitely worth owning. If you want multiplayer, rent this one, give it a run through, and move along. I love the game and am happy to own it, but I just wish it had multiplayer. Great environments, great sound, fun story, and exciting gameplay(especially the aerial aspect!). Give the game a chance and you'll find some fresh ideas meshed with some of the same stuff we've all gotten comfortable with.
Final Score : 8/10

ya i have read a few reviews fir this myself. my one worry is the controls for flying. putting controls for altitude; movement forward, backward, left, and right; aim, zoom if gun has it; firing weapon; quick select of weapons and gadgets. i just hope it will all fit well on a control, smooth flow and natural feel not too different from how that kind of stuff usually works, and not be too complicated and difficult.
besides that 1 thing it looks awesome.
